Downtown Albany is what it is today thanks to many legacy businesses. The entrepreneurial spirit and dedication of these families is inspiring. This is the third in a series of articles to share our legacy businesses with you.
The Frame House – 58 years 434 First Ave W – (541) 928-7676
For nearly 60 years, The Frame House has been a trusted Albany destination for custom framing and art supplies. Established in 1967, the shop has built a reputation for quality craftsmanship and personalized service.
In 1995, Rick Marcott sold The Frame House to Al Severson, who has been at the helm ever since, bringing a meticulous eye and a passion for preserving memories. Whether it’s a cherished family photo, a treasured piece of art, or a unique keepsake, Al approaches each project with care and precision, ensuring that every item is showcased beautifully.
The Frame House offers a wide selection of framing options, from classic to contemporary styles. In addition to custom framing, the shop provides ready-made frames and art supplies, catering to both professional artists and hobbyists alike. They stock supplies for artists to participate in the Big Show of Little Art, hosted annually by Gallery Calapooia in February.
Al’s commitment to excellence extends beyond his shop. He has actively supported local organizations and contributes to community events and initiatives. Notably, Al has been a dedicated volunteer for the Albany Veterans Day Parade for over 50 years, serving as its announcer for most of that time.
His involvement with the parade began in 1974 when Al was a drill instructor in the Oregon National Guard’s 2nd Battalion Infantry. His enduring dedication has played a significant role in cementing the parade as the largest Veteran’s parade west of the Mississippi. He was active in the leadership of the Veterans Commemoration Association, which staged the parade for many years.
Al is currently involved in the MidWillamette Valley Family YMCA Veterans Housing project which expects to break ground later this year.
The Depot – 49 years 822 Lyon St S – (541) 926-7326
For nearly 50 years, The Depot has been Albany’s favorite spot for classic fish and chips. Located in the historic Trailways Bus Depot since opening its doors in 1976, The Depot has become a beloved part of the downtown dining scene, known for consistent quality, fresh ingredients, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Locally owned and family operated, The Depot takes pride in doing things the right way. The fish is hand-breaded to order and every order of hand-cut fries is prepared fresh. Their commitment to sourcing produce from local Oregon businesses and using Alaskan fish supplied through an Oregon distributor speaks to a philosophy of supporting the local economy while delivering topnotch meals to their customers.
After more than two decades working at The Depot, Andrew Richter purchased the restaurant in the summer of 2021 from longtime owner Rick Campbell. Today, Andrew and his team continue the traditions that have made The Depot a community favorite. While the menu has remained nearly unchanged for 30 years, their popular fish tacos introduced during Restaurant Week, have earned a permanent spot.
More than just a restaurant, The Depot treats its staff like family and is proud to be a business that serves locals, by locals. The sense of community runs deep, with a loyal customer base that spans generations.
As they near their 50th anniversary, The Depot remains a cherished part of Albany’s downtown, offering fish and chips, shrimp salads, award-winning chowder, and friendly service that keeps customers coming back time after time
